Urban Leadership Institute

Urban Leadership (UL) is the act or practice of supporting community residents in positively engaging in activity that supports, policy, market studies, asset mapping, vision planning, and decision-making that enhances the residents’ ability to make sound and prudent decisions where they live, work, and play.

Therefore, Urban Leadership Training Institute is a holistic educational program that focuses on the entire person.  Through the Journey of Self-discovery, Workforce Development Skills, and Service Learning provide participants with a wide range of hands on learning opportunities.

Our work and support on many community based initiatives include:

The Kingsley Association (KA) specializes in providing soft skills pre-workforce development training to residents and stakeholders that focus on three key areas:

  • Journey of Self-Discovery
  • Workforce Development Skills
  • Self-Sufficiency Skills

KA provides one on one and small group leadership training and support to emerging community’s leaders in the following areas:

  • Situational Leadership
  • Principle Centered Leadership
  • Servant Leadership
  • Sustainable Practices

Mary L. Stone College Tour

The college tour offers African American youth the opportunity to explore higher education opportunities at historically black colleges and universities throughout the United States. More than 2,600 students have participated over the past twenty-seven years. It is the longest operating Black College Tour in the tri-state area.

Energy Audit Program

This project is focused on enhancing community capacity to access efficient energy retrofits that assess the reduction of resident’s use of electricity, water, and gas. The overall goal is to increase consumer demand for energy efficiency upgrade programs, while seeding innovations in Larimer that broaden access to financing for entrepreneurial ventures in conjunction with the redevelopment of Larimer as a Sustainable Community. Our goal is to train local residents in energy audits skills and promote the development of entrepreneurial businesses in the East End of Pittsburgh.

The project will identify twenty (20) homes in the Larimer/East End communities and execute an energy audit on each house. The project will train fifteen (15) urban residents in energy auditing skills/ and green construction; lead by a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certified Energy Auditor and in partnership with A. Phillip Randolph Institute. ULI-II participants will be trained to work as energy auditors, installers, and green construction laborers, to conduct audits and perform retrofit work identified through inspections. Successful participants will be taught using peer-to-peer training modules and study to become Energy Auditors, BPI Weatherization Installers, Rain Barrel Installers, and Solar Panel Installers.  Energy efficient focuses include:

  • Air sealing and insulation
  • Air-sealing “top-plates” and all penetrations between the home and the attic
  • Recessed lights and wiring or plumbing penetrations are sealed
  • Envelope leakage reductions from 25% to 40% sealing the plane between the house and the attic
  • Programmable thermostats
  • Carbon Dioxide/ detectors,
  • CFL/LED switch outs and insulation
  • Behavioral Change Workshops for residents

The overall goal is to provide Larimer residents with working examples of efficient energy upgrades. These efficient energy upgrades encompass desired retrofits that support the Larimer Vision Plan as it focuses on the development of a sustainable neighborhood

Industrial Mechanics Program

The Industrial Mechanics training program is an initiative of the Urban Green Growth Collaborative, which enables area residents for employment in manufacturing  (ie: professional machinery building, rebuilding, and retrofitting, focusing on: robotics, automation, custom machine design tool and die casting, drilling, pipes and valves, laser cutting, oil & gas, HVAC, mechanics, and welding).


  • Assembly and testing
  • Inspection
  • Field repair and installation
  • Metal machining and/or mechanical assembly focus

*Drug Screen Required, and 10% Travel (Domestic/International)

Course Description

This is a comprehensive introduction to fundamental industrial mechanical concepts, principles, and equipment. The course covers common industrial topics such as precision measurement, blue print reading, tools, rigging, ladders/scaffolds, hydraulic/ pneumatics, lubrication, bearings, flexible belt/mechanical drives, vibration, alignment, electricity, and safety. It covers 105 course hours in total.

Course Schedule

  • Monday/Wednesday at 5:30pm
  • Saturdays at 8:00-10:00am/10:00 am-12:00pm

Landscape Co-op

This year, we are proud to announce the launch of the Kingsley Association Co-op that was created in April 2012. The dedication and hard work of these participants have made an impact on the Larimer community as well as surrounding areas. The mission of the landscaping co-op is to create a viable and sustainable co-op that will provide not only landscaping services to the community of Larimer but employment to the residents as well.
